Zapf Dingbats® font

Zapf Dingbats is a dingbat typeface of symbols and ornaments. It was designed by Hermann Zapf, and first issued by ITC in 1978. It comes with macOS; elsewhere it is a commercial typeface. FontKind’s catalogue holds fonts for the Latin alphabet and no symbol font, so its symbols are below as text, in your own fonts.

Unicode took most of its symbols into its Dingbats block, so they are text, and open fonts draw them too: Google’s Noto Sans Symbols fonts include dingbats. Here they are set in your own fonts, not in Zapf Dingbats. Copy them, and many more, on Copy and paste symbols

Questions about Zapf Dingbats

Is Zapf Dingbats free?

Not to use anywhere you like. It comes with macOS, so a Mac already has it. Anywhere else it needs a licence from its foundry.

Who designed Zapf Dingbats?

Zapf Dingbats was designed by Hermann Zapf, and first issued by ITC in 1978.

Can I use Zapf Dingbats in Word, Google Docs or Canva?

In Word on a Mac, yes, as macOS comes with Zapf Dingbats; on Windows, only after you install a licensed copy. Google Docs adds fonts from Google Fonts, and Zapf Dingbats isn’t one of them. Canva publishes no list of its fonts: search its font menu, or, with Canva Pro, upload a font whose licence allows it.

What can I use instead of Zapf Dingbats?

Its symbols themselves. Unicode took most of its symbols into its Dingbats block, so they are text, and open fonts draw them too: Google’s Noto Sans Symbols fonts include dingbats (Wikipedia: Dingbats (Unicode block) ). Copy them on Copy and paste symbols, where they show in your own fonts, not in Zapf Dingbats.
