Copy and paste symbols

Tap a symbol to copy it. Each one also joins the line at the top, so you can build a row of them and copy it all at once.

Text, not pictures: each device draws a symbol in its own font, and screen readers name them one by one.

About symbols

01

Symbols are text

Every symbol here is a Unicode character, like a letter: it pastes anywhere text goes and arrives as itself, drawn in the reader’s own font. That is why the same heart looks a little different on an iPhone, an Android phone and a computer.

An old device may show a box for a rare symbol, when none of its fonts has it. The symbols here are common ones, on today’s phones and computers.

02

Symbols that are also emoji

Some symbols are emoji too, ♥, ☀, ✔, ✂ and the zodiac among them, and phones can draw them as colour pictures. This page copies them with an invisible character, U+FE0E, that asks for the plain text symbol. Most apps honour it; a few draw the emoji anyway.

03

Where they work

They paste wherever text goes: bios, names, captions, comments, chats and documents. A username takes only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so symbols do not go there.

04

Read aloud

Screen readers name most symbols, black star, rightwards arrow, so a row of them is read out one by one. Keep them for decoration, and never make a symbol the only way something is said.

Copy and paste symbols, answered

How do I copy a symbol?
Tap it: it is copied, and it joins the line at the top of the symbols. Paste it with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V, or press and hold in a text box on a phone and choose Paste. To paste several at once, tap them in turn and copy the line.
How do I type symbols without copying them?
On Windows, press the Windows key and the full stop for the emoji and symbols panel. On a Mac, Ctrl+Cmd+Space opens the Character Viewer. On a phone, the emoji keyboard has many, and holding a key down offers others: hold the hyphen for a dash or a bullet.
Why does a symbol look different after I paste it?
A symbol is text, so each device draws it in its own font: the shape is the same character, drawn by another hand. A box or a question mark means the device has no font with that symbol.
Why does a heart turn into an emoji?
Some symbols, ♥ and ☀ among them, are also emoji, and phones may draw them in colour. This page copies them with U+FE0E, an invisible character that asks for the text symbol; most apps honour it. For a heart that is never an emoji, use ♡.
Can I use symbols in my username?
No: usernames on Instagram, TikTok, Discord and X take only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Use symbols in your display name, your bio or a caption.
