Instagram fonts
Instagram has no font menu for your bio, your name or a caption. Type once, copy your words in the styles that show there, and see them in a profile before you paste them.
Unicode symbols, not fonts: screen readers may skip or spell them out, and search may not read them as words. For print or a logo, use real fonts

About instagram fonts
01
No font menu, so other letters
Instagram sets your bio, your name, captions and comments in the font of the phone reading them, and has no setting to change it. These styles change the letters instead: each becomes a look-alike character from Unicode, so the style travels with the text and arrives on every phone.
Copy a line, or copy from the preview, then in Instagram open your profile, tap Edit profile and paste into Name or Bio; for a post, paste into the caption.
02
Stories and Reels have fonts of their own
The text tool in Stories and Reels has a row of Instagram’s own fonts to tap through, Instagram Sans among them, the typeface Instagram introduced in 2022. They stay in Instagram and set the letters you type there; styled letters pasted in mostly keep the look they came with.
03
How long it can be
A bio holds 150 characters and a caption 2,200, as Instagram and Meta state them, and a post takes 5 hashtags at most. The preview counts each styled letter as one character, as Unicode does.
In ten of the sixteen lines here, the bold, italic, cursive, gothic, double-struck and monospace ones, each letter is stored as two units, and a counter that counts units counts it twice. If Instagram stops you short of the limit, cut a word or style fewer. Strikethrough and underline add a mark to every letter, and the marks count too.
04
Found, and heard
Search may not match 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓮 to Jane, nor a styled hashtag to the plain word. Keep the name people look for, and your hashtags, in plain letters; your username is plain anyway.
To a screen reader they are not letters: in tests published in 2025, NVDA, VoiceOver and Narrator skipped styled letters altogether, JAWS spelled each one out with its style, and only TalkBack read the words. Search may not read them as words either. Keep styled letters to a name or a line, and write what people must read, a link, a date, a price, in plain letters.
05
Real fonts for a picture
For words on a photo, a quote post or a story graphic, use real fonts: the font generator sets your words in free fonts and saves them as a PNG with a transparent background, to place in Canva or any editing app.

Instagram fonts, answered
- How do I change the font on Instagram?
- Instagram has no font setting for your bio, your name, captions or comments: everyone sees them in their own phone’s font. You can change the letters instead: type here, copy a line and paste it into Instagram. In Stories and Reels the text tool has fonts of its own to tap through.
- How do I get a different font in my Instagram bio?
- Type your bio in the box and copy the line you like, or pick a style in the preview and copy it there. Then in Instagram go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Bio, and paste. A bio holds up to 150 characters.
- Can I use fancy fonts in my Instagram name?
- In your name, yes: paste it under Edit profile, then Name. Not in your username, which takes only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Search may not match styled letters to plain ones, so keep the part people search for plain, or style one word of it.
- What font does Instagram use?
- Instagram’s own typeface is Instagram Sans, introduced in 2022 for its brand and offered for text in Stories and Reels. Bios, captions and comments show in the font of the phone reading them, which is why they look a little different on an iPhone and on an Android phone.
- Do fancy fonts work in Instagram hashtags?
- Keep hashtags plain. A tag in styled letters may not lead to the posts under the plain word, so people searching for it miss yours. Instagram takes up to 5 hashtags a post.
- Do styled letters use up more of my 150 characters?
- Each styled letter is one character, and the preview counts it as one. Bold, italic, cursive, gothic, double-struck and monospace letters are stored as two units each, though, and some counters count units: if Instagram stops you before 150, cut a word or style fewer. Strikethrough and underline add a mark to every letter, and each mark counts as a character.
- Why does my bio look different on another phone?
- Each phone draws styled letters with the fonts it has, so cursive on an iPhone and on an Android phone is drawn by different hands, and an old phone may show a box for a rare letter. The style always arrives; its exact shape is the reading phone’s.
