Handwriting fonts

Handwriting fonts look written by hand: joined scripts, brush and pen calligraphy, everyday print. They suit names, invitations and headings better than paragraphs. Here are 331 free ones in four styles, with picks for invitations, notes, signs and logos.

01 / Styles

Four styles of handwriting

Our lab’s styles, told by the look of the letters: each with its most used fonts and a page of its own.

01

Formal script

Copperplate’s heirs: slanted, joined letters with a pointed pen’s thick and thin, and room for flourishes. For invitations, certificates and menus.

02

Casual script

Joined letters written fast with a brush pen or a marker: rounder, bouncier and louder. For cards, cafés and logos.

How we tellOur lab’s cursive style, less its fancy scripts.

03

Calligraphy and brush

Letters whose thick and thin follow a broad nib or a brush’s pressure, often rough at the edges. For quotes, labels and signs.

04

Hand print

Unjoined letters as a person prints them, with a pen, a pencil or a felt tip: the easiest of these to read.

02 / Best for

The best handwriting fonts

By use, picked by our measurements, most used first. The rule is under each job.

Invitations and cards

Contrast of 2.5 : 1 or more: the swelling thick and hairline thin of a pointed pen.

Notes, labels and worksheets

x-height of 50% of the em or more, a lowercase of its own and even strokes, contrast of 1.5 : 1 or less: handwriting that stays readable small.

Signs and posters

The darkest fifth of handwriting fonts, ink over 55% of their letters’ box: a marker’s or a brush’s weight, readable from afar.

Logos

The fifth of handwriting fonts least like any other, with no family or copy of their own: their closest match here scores 82 of 100 or less. A signature or a shop name set in one looks less like a template.

04 / Questions

Handwriting fonts, answered

What is the difference between script, cursive and handwriting fonts?
Script and cursive fonts join their letters as a pen does: formal scripts follow copperplate, casual ones a brush pen or a marker. Handwriting fonts in the narrow sense print each letter apart, as most people write a note. FontKind files them all as handwriting, and the four styles on this page split them.
Are these handwriting fonts free for commercial use?
Yes, for invitations, cards, stickers and products you sell. All 331 handwriting fonts are free, under licences that allow commercial use: 307 under the SIL Open Font License, 16 under the Apache License and 3 in the public domain (CC0). The other 5 handwriting fonts come under Fontshare’s own licence, ITF’s: commercial use as well, but no changing the files, and anyone outside your organisation gets their own copy from Fontshare. The cards and prints are yours; only the font files come with conditions, which each font’s page lists.
Which handwriting fonts are in Google Docs and Word?
Google Docs adds Google Fonts families under More fonts in its font menu, so 232 of these 331 handwriting fonts are most likely there, among them Updock, Pacifico and Satisfy. The 45 handwriting fonts from Fontsource, Fontshare and their makers’ own releases are not in Docs. None of these handwriting fonts is one of Microsoft 365’s cloud fonts: install one from its source to use it in Word. Windows 11 comes with Comic Sans MS, Ink Free, Segoe Print and Segoe Script, each linked to the free fonts most like it.
Which handwriting font is easiest to read?
Large, even letters read best: by our measures, Shadows Into Light, Delius, Bad Script and Gloria Hallelujah have an x-height of half the em or more and strokes of even weight. Joined scripts are harder to read in long lines: keep them to names and headings.
Can I make a font from my own handwriting?
Not on FontKind: that takes a font maker, where you write the letters into a template and it builds the font file. To write your own words in the fonts here, the handwriting generator sets them in handwriting fonts and lets you download a PNG.
How do I use a handwriting font with Cricut?
Install the font on your computer, then close and reopen Cricut Design Space: it is listed under System fonts. The letters of a joined script overlap, so select the text and Weld it, and it cuts as one piece.
What are the most popular handwriting fonts?
On Google Fonts, the most used handwriting families are Permanent Marker, Updock, Zeyada, Shadows Into Light and Pacifico, in that order: the list of all 331 on this page starts with them in its Most used order.
