Discord’s own formatting
In messages, not in names: type the marks round your words. A backslash before a mark shows the mark as it is.

About discord text
01
Your name in styled letters
Your display name and your nickname in each server take styled letters, up to 32 characters; your username takes only small letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Your About Me, your status, server names and role names take them too.
With Nitro, Discord’s Display Name Styles set your name in one of Discord’s own fonts, with colours and effects. Without it, styled letters do the job, and they look the same in every app and on every device.
02
Messages: Discord’s own formatting first
In messages Discord formats text itself, and its bold, italic and lines are real formatting: screen readers read the words, and search finds them. Use the marks in the table for messages, and styled letters where the marks do nothing, in names and statuses.
03
When a styled name comes back plain
Some servers run bots that rename members whose names they cannot read or search, so a styled nickname can turn back into plain letters there. Keep part of your name in plain letters, so people can mention you by typing it.
04
Who can read it
To a screen reader they are not letters: in tests published in 2025, NVDA, VoiceOver and Narrator skipped styled letters altogether, JAWS spelled each one out with its style, and only TalkBack read the words. Search may not read them as words either.
Discord text, answered
- How do I change my font on Discord?
- Discord sets every message in its own font, gg sans, and you cannot change the font others see; Settings, Appearance changes only the size you see. With Nitro, Display Name Styles give your name one of Discord’s fonts. Anywhere else, paste styled letters from this page: they look the same to everyone.
- How do I make text bold on Discord?
- In a message, put two asterisks on each side:
**text**. In your name or status, where formatting does nothing, copy the Bold sans line here and paste it in. - How do I hide a spoiler on Discord?
- Put two vertical bars on each side:
||text||. Others see a dark bar until they click or tap it. - Can I use fancy fonts in my Discord username?
- No: since 2023 usernames take only small letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Your display name, shown in servers and messages, takes styled letters, and so does each server nickname.
- Why did my fancy nickname change back?
- A server’s moderation bot may rename members whose names are not plain letters, so that everyone can be found and mentioned. Ask the server, or keep part of your name plain.
