FontKind is a website about free fonts, at fontkind.com. This page says what we learn about you when you use it, why, and what you can do about it. For anything about your data, write to fontkind@pyxl.ai.
01
What we collect
- An account, if you make one: your name and email, and your password, which we keep only as a one-way hash. If you sign in with Google, we receive the name, email and picture Google shares. A cookie keeps you signed in.
- Visits: which pages you open and what you click, where you came from, your browser, device and screen size, and a rough location worked out from your IP address. We count them with PostHog, on its servers in the European Union.
- Without your yes the count uses no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. PostHog tells visits apart by a code it computes from your IP address and browser with a key it changes every day, so a visit cannot be linked to you or to your visits on other days.
- With your yes PostHog also uses cookies and your browser’s storage to recognise your later visits, and records how the pages are used, as a screen recording, with anything you type hidden.
- Only in your browser, never sent to us: the fonts in your compare tray, the letters you pick, the words you try fonts in on a font’s page and in compare, the text of a practice sheet, the initials in the monogram maker, the text you turn into Unicode letters on the copy-and-paste pages, what you type into the site search, and your answer about cookies. So are the words and the name you type into the font generator, the signature generator, the Old English translator, the Cricut fonts page and the famous fonts’ pages: your browser sets them in the fonts you pick, and makes the PNG files you download itself.
- The site search runs in your browser: when you first open it, it loads a list of the site’s pages from fontkind.com, the same for everyone, and matches what you type against that list on your device. Only if you choose to search all fonts for your words do they go to the fonts page, in its address, as that page’s own search does.
- Sent to our server only when you ask: when you choose Download SVG on one of those tools, your words go to our own server, which draws their outlines in that font, for a cutting machine, and sends them back. We do not store or log them, and they go to no one else. The fonts you pick there are kept in the page’s address by their names, never your words, so you can share it.
- Server logs: our host, Vercel, logs each request, with the IP address and browser, to run the site and keep it safe.
- Fonts: pages load font files from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com), from Fontshare (api.fontshare.com and cdn.fontshare.com), from jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net), which serves Fontsource’s fonts and the open fonts kept in their makers’ own repositories, and from fontkind.com itself, which serves its own copy of other open fonts. Each receives your IP address, your browser’s details and the request: which file, for which site. A request to Google Fonts can also name the letters a font is cut to, such as a page’s sample or a letter you picked; the words you type are never sent with any of them. The fonts you pick on the tools above come from our own copy where we keep one, and otherwise whole from Google Fonts.
02
Why
- The account: to give you the account you asked for.
- The count without cookies and the server logs: our legitimate interest in knowing which pages people use, and in keeping the site working and safe.
- Cookies and the screen recording: only with your consent, which you can take back at any time below.
- The fonts: our legitimate interest in showing you the fonts themselves.
We do not sell your data, show ads or build advertising profiles.
03
Who handles it
- Vercel hosts the site.
- Supabase holds the database: the accounts and the site’s data.
- PostHog counts visits and keeps the recordings, in the EU.
- Google runs sign-in with Google and serves fonts.
- Fontshare serves fonts.
- jsDelivr serves fonts: Fontsource’s, and the open fonts in their makers’ repositories.
Some of them work outside your country, including in the United States. They do so under the safeguards the law requires, such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
04
How long we keep it
- Your account: until you ask us to delete it.
- Visit counts and recordings: as long as they help us improve the site, and no longer than our PostHog project keeps them.
- Server logs: the short time Vercel keeps them.
05
Your rights
You can ask to see the data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it along with your account, to object to how we use it, or to have it in a portable form. Write to fontkind@pyxl.ai. In the European Union and the United Kingdom you can also complain to your data protection authority.
07
Children
Accounts are not for children under 16. The cursive worksheets need no account, and what is typed into them stays in the browser.
