Bubble lettering

01

What it is

Bubble lettering swells every stroke until the letter looks inflated: round ends, soft corners and holes squeezed small. Its roots are the throw-ups of 1970s graffiti; it became the lettering of birthday banners, school projects and stickers.

02

When to use it

Birthday banners, posters, name signs, stickers, classroom displays and any word you want to colour in.

03

The fonts here

Modak is the puffiest and heaviest, its holes pressed to slits, and it covers Devanagari too. Bagel Fat One is softer and rounder and covers Korean; DynaPuff alone comes in weights and widths, from regular to bold and from 75% to full width; Rubik Bubbles sets the widest text, its edges made of small bubbles.

04

In Canva

With the font uploaded (Canva Pro), the Hollow text effect turns bubble letters into outlines to colour in. On the free plan, print hollow letters from the bubble letter sheets instead.

05

In Cricut Design Space

Bubble letters are among the easiest to cut: fat strokes, round corners, few thin parts. Use Offset in Design Space for a border round the word on a layered sticker, and expect Rubik Bubbles’ scalloped edge to take longest to weed.

06

In Word and Docs

Type the word in the installed font, then open Font, Text Effects: set Text Fill to No fill and Text Outline to a solid line, and the letters print hollow, ready to colour.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Bubble fonts, answered

What font is used for bubble letters?
No single one. Modak, Bagel Fat One, DynaPuff and Rubik Bubbles are picked first here, and the list below has ten more; Modak is also the font of the bubble alphabet, where every letter is drawn large to copy.
How do I get bubble letters in Google Docs?
Docs adds most Google Fonts under Fonts, More fonts: search for Modak or Bagel Fat One there. For hollow letters to colour, print a sheet from the bubble alphabet instead.
