Free fonts, answered

Are these fonts free for commercial use?
Yes. All 2,035 fonts are free, under licences that allow commercial use: 1,895 under the SIL Open Font License, 39 under the Apache License, 27 in the public domain (CC0), 5 under the Ubuntu Font Licence, 5 under the MIT License and 1 in the public domain (the Unlicense). The other 63 fonts come under Fontshare’s own licence, ITF’s: commercial use as well, but no changing the files, and anyone outside your organisation gets their own copy from Fontshare. Each font’s page names its licence and what it allows.
Where do these fonts come from?
From three open libraries, 1,507 from Google Fonts, 64 from Fontsource and 64 from Fontshare, and 400 from libre foundries and designers who publish their own, such as Velvetyne, Collletttivo and repositories on GitHub. Each font’s page links to where you download it and names its licence. Google Fonts and Fontshare serve their fonts themselves, and Fontsource through jsDelivr; of the others, FontKind serves its own copy of the web fonts, kept with their licence, or loads them from their repository through jsDelivr.
How do I install a font in Word or Google Docs?
Download it from its source. On Windows, right-click the .ttf or .otf file and choose Install; on a Mac, double-click it and choose Install Font; then restart Word. Google Docs needs no file: choose More fonts in its font menu and search for the family, if it comes from Google Fonts.
What are the most popular free fonts?
On Google Fonts, the most used families are Google Sans, Inter, Lato, Open Sans, Poppins and Roboto, in that order, as the list on this page shows them in its Most used order.
What are the main types of fonts?
Five kinds: sans serif (697 here), serif (354 here), display (554 here), handwriting (331 here) and monospace (99 here). Types of fonts shows the styles inside each.
How do I find a font like one I already use?
Open its page here: each lists the fonts closest to it, compared letter by letter. For a font that came with Windows, such as Arial or Times New Roman, see the free alternatives; to start from a few letters you like, find fonts by their letters.
