Cursive lettering

01

What it is

Cursive is joined-up writing: each small letter runs into the next on a connecting stroke, and the capitals carry the loops. The fonts here are scripts drawn for print, from a quick everyday hand to formal penmanship, not the school model children learn to write.

02

When to use it

Cards, invitations, a name on a mug or a sign, labels and logos: a line or two, set large. Body text is the wrong place for it, because a page of joined letters is slow to read.

03

The fonts here

Dancing Script is the casual one, and the only one of the four with weights, from regular to bold. Great Vibes is formal and the narrowest, with big looped capitals; Pacifico is the heaviest and widest, a fat retro brush; Sacramento is a thin monoline whose small letters are the shortest of the four, so set it larger than the rest.

04

In Canva

Canva keeps no public list of its fonts; type the font’s name into its font menu first. If it is not there, download the PNG at 3× for words you will set large: thin script joins are the first thing to blur when an image is stretched.

05

In Cricut Design Space

The SVG comes welded, so the whole word cuts in one piece. Typed into Design Space itself, script letters overlap and cut apart unless you select the line and Weld it. The hairlines of Great Vibes and Sacramento tear when small vinyl is weeded: cut them big, or choose Pacifico or Dancing Script in bold.

06

In Word and Docs

Leave character spacing at Normal, since Expanded pulls joined letters apart, and never set a script in capitals only. Pacifico and Great Vibes hold alternate letters that Word switches on under Font, Advanced, Stylistic sets.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Your name in cursive

Type your name in the panel above, and the fonts you pick write it in cursive. What people ask next:

How do I get my name in cursive?
Type it in the panel above, with a capital first letter. The fonts you pick, up to six, write it in cursive, and Download PNG saves it with a transparent background, for a card, an invitation or a Cricut project. A long name shrinks to fit its card; the PNG keeps it at full size.
How do I write my name in cursive by hand?
The fonts above are scripts for print. For the cursive taught at school, type your name on a practice sheet: it is set in a school model, in grey to trace, with rows to write it under. Each letter of the cursive alphabet has a page with its strokes in order and how it joins the next.Cursive practice sheets →The cursive alphabet →
Why does my initial look strange in cursive?
Some capitals change more than others: cursive Q looks like a 2 and Z like a 3, and I and J are easy to mix up. Each capital’s page in the cursive alphabet shows how it is written and what it is taken for.
A signature or initials instead?
To sign your name, the signature generator sets it in fonts that look signed, with a slant and a swash. For your initials, the monogram maker sets them as a classic monogram, the last name’s initial larger in the middle.Signature generator →Monogram maker →

Cursive fonts, answered

What is the most popular cursive font?
Of the four picked here, Sacramento sees the most use on Google Fonts, 39th of all its families by Google’s own ranking, then Dancing Script (76th), Pacifico (127th) and Great Vibes (185th).
Is there a cursive font in Word?
Windows 11 comes with Segoe Script, and Microsoft 365 adds Lucida Handwriting, Brush Script MT, Edwardian Script ITC and Freestyle Script as cloud fonts. None of the free scripts here is among Microsoft’s fonts, so download one from this site and Word lists it with the rest.
