How to use your monogram

01

Which initial goes in the middle of a monogram?

For one person, the classic monogram puts the first name’s initial on the left, the last name’s in the middle and larger, and the middle name’s on the right: Jane Ann Smith is J S A. Type them in that order; Stacked sets the same middle initial large, with the other two one over the other beside it.

With the letters all one size, choose Even and type them in their usual order: J A S. A single letter is often the last name’s, for a family’s things, or the first name’s, on something only yours.

For a couple, the two first initials go either side of the shared last name’s, larger in the middle, as on wedding invitations, napkins and the cake.

02

How do I cut a monogram with Cricut?

Choose Transparent and download the PNG. In Design Space choose Upload, then Upload Image, and open the file. There is no background to remove: save it as a cut image, and Design Space traces the letters and the frame for the blade, or as a print then cut image.

There is no SVG here, because your initials never leave this tab: a browser shows a web font’s letters but does not hand the page their outlines, which a blade follows. The PNG is 1,200 pixels tall, so the traced edges stay smooth at any size you cut.

For an SVG of the letters alone, type them into the font generator and choose Download SVG: our server then draws their outlines to cut, and forgets them.

03

On invitations, mugs and shirts

In Canva, Word or Google Docs, add the PNG as an image: with a transparent background it sits on any paper or colour. Gold suits invitations; choose White with Transparent for a dark shirt, mug or tumbler.

For embroidery or engraving, take the PNG to whoever stitches or engraves it, with the font’s name from its card: they can set it in the font itself.

04

Free for commercial use

Many interlocking circle and vine monogram fonts online are free for personal use only. Every font here is free under an open licence, such as the SIL Open Font License: put your monogram on what you make and sell, from napkins to shirts. To share or change the font files themselves, read the licence on the font’s page.

05

Your initials stay here

Your initials are drawn in your browser and kept only while this tab is open: they are not stored, not sent to us and not put in any address. Downloads are counted by font and layout, never by initials.

Most of the fonts come from our own address; the others come whole from Google Fonts, which sees the fonts the page asks for, never your initials. The PNG and its file name are made on your device.
