Gothic lettering

01

What it is

Gothic here means blackletter, the broad-pen book hands of late medieval Europe and the types cut from them: dense textura, rounder Fraktur and their cousins. Americans often call it Old English, and it is the lettering of diplomas, newspaper mastheads and tattoos.

02

When to use it

Certificates, mastheads, band and brewery logos, tattoos and Halloween: a name or a title rather than a paragraph. Use capital and small letters together, because a word in blackletter capitals alone is close to unreadable.

03

The fonts here

UnifrakturMaguntia is a Fraktur based on a typeface of 1901, with the old ligatures of German print. Manufacturing Consent, added to Google Fonts in 2025, is the narrowest of the four and the textura most people mean by Old English. Pirata One is the heaviest, with the plainest capitals; Grenze Gotisch, a modern blackletter, alone comes in a range of weights, thin to black.

04

In Canva

Blackletter’s hairlines vanish first when an image is shrunk on a design: download the PNG at about the size it will appear, or at 3× if it will be small. On a certificate, set only the name in gothic and the rest of the wording in a plain serif.

05

In Cricut Design Space

Fraktur hairlines and the pointed serifs of textura are fragile in vinyl. Cut gothic lettering large, and for small decals prefer Pirata One, or Grenze Gotisch in a bold weight.

06

In Word and Docs

UnifrakturMaguntia joins some letter pairs into the ligatures of old German print by itself, and keeps more historical ones that Word shows when you choose Font, Advanced, Ligatures, Historical and Discretionary.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Your name in gothic letters

Type your name in the panel above, and the fonts you pick set it in blackletter. What people ask next:

How do I get my name in gothic letters?
Type it in the panel above with only its first letter as a capital: Smith, not SMITH. Blackletter capitals are made to start a word, and a row of them is hard to read. The fonts you pick set it in gothic, from Fraktur to Old English, and Download PNG saves it with a transparent background.
Gothic letters to copy and paste?
For a bio, a username or a gamer tag, the Old English translator turns your text into Fraktur letters from Unicode, which paste where fonts can’t go. They show in the reader’s own fonts, so they look plainer than the pictures here.Old English translator →
How do I draw my name in Old English?
The Old English alphabet shows each letter, capital and small, to copy, and its practice sheets set your own name in hollow letters to trace and colour in.The Old English alphabet →Old English sheets →
For a tattoo, or just your initials?
Take the PNG to your tattoo artist with the font’s name from its card; the tattoo generator sets your words in the script, Old English and rock fonts you pick, side by side. For initials alone, the monogram maker sets them in blackletter, as on a crest.Tattoo font generator →Monogram maker →

Gothic fonts, answered

Are gothic and Old English fonts the same?
Yes, in practice: both mean blackletter. Old English is the American name for textura, the dense upright kind, and Fraktur is the German kind with broken, rounder curves. Gothic is also the old American trade name for plain sans serifs, as in Franklin Gothic, which is another thing altogether.
Why is blackletter hard to read?
Its small letters stand on the same upright strokes, so i, m, n and u run together, and its capitals are ornate enough to be misread: a Fraktur A can look like a U. German readers took Fraktur in their stride until the 1940s; today it is a display style.
