Graffiti lettering

01

What it is

Graffiti lettering grew up on the walls and subway trains of New York in the 1970s: the tag, a signature written in one fast stroke; the throw-up, fat outline letters filled in quickly; and the piece, worked letters with colour, highlights and depth.

02

When to use it

Posters, flyers, shirts, skate and music artwork, a gamer tag or a name for a bedroom door.

03

The fonts here

Sedgwick Ave Display copies a writer’s tag, and half its small letters are its capitals drawn smaller. Rubik Spray Paint sets the widest text of the four and fills its letters with spray texture; Knewave is a fast, slanted brush throw-up, as heavy as the spray; Permanent Marker draws every small letter as a smaller capital, the way a marker tag is written.

04

In Canva

For a sticker-style shadow, download the word twice, once in white and once in black, and set the black copy a few pixels down and to the right behind the white one.

05

In Cricut Design Space

Rubik Spray Paint’s speckles come out as hundreds of tiny pieces when cut. For vinyl, choose Sedgwick Ave Display, Knewave or Permanent Marker, whose edges are solid.

06

In Word and Docs

Graffiti fills a line fast: a name that fits in Permanent Marker may wrap in Rubik Spray Paint. Insert the PNG and choose Wrap Text, In Front of Text, to place it freely on a poster.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Your name in graffiti

Type your name in the panel above, and the fonts you pick tag, spray or marker it. What people ask next:

How do I get my name in graffiti?
Type it in the panel above: the fonts you pick, up to six, set it in graffiti, and Download PNG saves it with a transparent background, for a poster, a sticker or a shirt. Short names and nicknames hold up best: graffiti letters are wide, and a long name shrinks to fit its card.
How do I draw my name in graffiti?
Start from the graffiti alphabet: every letter, A to Z, drawn in outline to copy. The practice sheets set your own name in hollow graffiti letters, to trace and colour in.The graffiti alphabet →Graffiti practice sheets →
Tag, throw-up or wildstyle?
A tag is a quick signature in one line, a throw-up a fast outline filled in a colour or two, and wildstyle locks its letters together with arrows and points. The fonts here include a hand tag, spray paint, a brush throw-up and marker; wildstyle is drawn by hand, and the catalogue has no open font for it yet.
Bubble graffiti instead?
Throw-ups are bubble letters at heart. The bubble font generator sets your name in round, puffy fonts, and the bubble alphabet draws each letter in outline to copy.Bubble font generator →The bubble alphabet →

Graffiti fonts, answered

What is the graffiti font called?
There is no single one: graffiti is drawn by hand, and each font copies one tool or style. Here, Sedgwick Ave Display copies a hand-style tag, Rubik Spray Paint the spray can, Knewave a brush and Permanent Marker the marker pen.
Can I spray paint these letters on a wall?
On a wall you own or have permission for, yes: print the letters large, cut them out as a stencil, or project them and trace. Writing on someone else’s wall without asking is against the law almost everywhere.
