Cursive fonts

Letters joined as a pen writes them, each running into the next. Formal scripts slant and loop like copperplate; casual ones bounce like quick handwriting. Set them for names, invitations, logos and cards, in short lines rather than paragraphs.

02 / Formal or casual

Formal or casual?

Two hands share the name. These are picked by eye, from the scripts the cursive alphabet sets beside each letter.

Formal scripts

Copperplate’s heirs: hairlines and swelling strokes as from a pointed pen, long loops, and small letters under tall, flourished capitals. For wedding invitations, certificates and anything that should look engraved.

Casual scripts

Brush and felt-tip hands: more even strokes, rounder shapes and a bounce, with fewer flourishes. For logos, cards, packaging and signs.

Are these cursive fonts free for commercial use?
Yes. All 118 are free, and each one’s licence allows commercial use: client work, products, logos and advertising. The 2 from Fontshare come under ITF’s own licence: commercial use too, but no changing the files and no passing them on. Each font’s page names its licence and answers the rest.
How do I install one of these cursive fonts in Word?
Open the font’s page here and get it from its source: Google Fonts, Fontsource, Fontshare or its maker’s own page. On Windows, right-click the .ttf or .otf file and choose Install; on a Mac, double-click it and choose Install. Restart Word, and the font is in its menu. None of these is one of Microsoft 365’s cloud fonts, so a document set in one needs the font on every computer that opens it: send a PDF instead.
Can I use these cursive fonts in Canva?
Search Canva’s font menu first: it has many free fonts but publishes no list of them, so we can’t say which of these are there. If one is missing, a paid plan such as Canva Pro lets you upload the font file, OTF, TTF or WOFF, to your Brand Kit. Canva’s help
How do I use these cursive fonts with Cricut?
Install the font on your computer as for Word, then close and reopen Cricut Design Space: the font is under System fonts. For a script whose letters touch, select the text and Weld it, so it cuts as one piece. Or type your words in the font generator and download an SVG, its letters already welded. Fonts for Cricut →
