Display fonts

Display fonts are drawn to be seen big: headlines, posters, logos and packaging. They trade comfort in long text for character. Here are 554 free ones, with six styles our lab picks out and the best for posters, narrow spaces and logos.

01 / Styles

Six display styles

Six of the styles our lab tells by the look of the letters, each with its most used display fonts and a page of its own.

01

Blackletter

The dense, broken letters of medieval books: the Old English of newspaper mastheads, diplomas and tattoos.

02

Stencil

Letters cut with bridges, so a sprayed or painted shape holds together: crates, the army, street signs.

03

Pixel

Letters on the square grid of early screens, arcades and handheld games.

04

Bubble

Fat, round, inflated letters: toys, sweets, birthday posters.

05

Futuristic

Square-cut, wide and technical: science fiction titles, games and tech brands.

06

Horror

Dripping, cracked and scratched letters for Halloween and horror titles.

02 / Best for

The best display fonts

By use, picked by our measurements, most used first. The rule is under each job.

Posters and headlines

The darkest fifth of display fonts, ink over 65% of their letters’ box: heavy enough to carry across a street.

Narrow spaces

The narrowest fifth of display fonts, 42% of the em a letter or less: long words on signs, spines and packaging.

Brand families

4 weights or more: a display face that can carry a whole identity, from a light tagline to a heavy headline.

Logos

The fifth of display fonts least like any other, with no family or copy of their own: their closest match here scores 75 of 100 or less. A logo set in one is less likely to look like another brand’s.

04 / Questions

Display fonts, answered

What is a display font?
A font drawn for large sizes: headlines, posters, logos, signs and packaging. Its details, heavy strokes, ornament, tight spacing or an unusual build, read well big but tire the eye in a paragraph, so set the text beside it in a plainer sans serif or serif.
Which display fonts are best for logos?
A logo should not look like everyone else’s, so we pick the display fonts least like any other on FontKind: Germania One, Corben, Stardos Stencil and Prosto One. Every licence here allows a font’s use in a logo.
Which display fonts work best on posters?
The heaviest carry furthest: Bangers, Lilita One, Alfa Slab One and Black Ops One are among the darkest fifth of display fonts by our ink measure. For long titles in tight spaces, the narrowest, such as Lobster Two and Pirata One, fit more letters to the line.
Are these display fonts free for commercial use?
Yes, posters, merchandise and packaging included. All 554 display fonts are free, under licences that allow commercial use: 518 under the SIL Open Font License, 13 under the Apache License, 7 in the public domain (CC0) and 1 under the MIT License. The other 15 display fonts come under Fontshare’s own licence, ITF’s: commercial use as well, but no changing the files, and anyone outside your organisation gets their own copy from Fontshare. What you print with them, a poster or a T-shirt, is yours to sell.
What are the most popular display fonts?
On Google Fonts, the most used display families are Bangers, Lilita One, Alfa Slab One, Black Ops One and Comfortaa, in that order: the list of all 554 on this page starts with them in its Most used order.
Can I use display fonts in Google Docs?
Google Docs adds Google Fonts families under More fonts in its font menu, so 398 of these 554 display fonts are most likely there. Of these display fonts, 13 are colour fonts, which Google says Docs likely does not support yet. The 139 display fonts from Fontsource, Fontshare and their makers’ own releases are not in Docs. In Word, ADLaM Display is a Microsoft 365 cloud font, in the font menu. Install any other of these display fonts from its source first. Windows 11 comes with Gabriola, linked to the free fonts most like it.
