Monospace fonts

In a monospace font every character takes the same width, as on a typewriter, so text lines up in columns: the fonts of code, terminals and tables. Here are 99 free ones, from coding fonts to typewriter and pixel faces, with the best for small sizes and narrow panes.

Three kinds of monospace

Coding fonts by our measures, typewriter and pixel faces by the look of their letters.

01

Coding

Fonts for editors and terminals, with a bold for keywords and an italic for comments.

02

Typewriter

The letters of the office typewriter, Courier’s family: slab serifs and strokes of one weight, as if typed on paper.

How we tellOur lab’s typewriter style, by the look of the letters: too few fonts yet for a page of its own.

03

Pixel and terminal

Letters on the square grid of early screens and terminals, each in a cell of its own.

02 / Best for

The best monospace fonts

By use, picked by our measurements, most used first. The rule is under each job.

Small sizes and terminals

x-height of 53% of the em or more, with 3 weights or more: big lowercase letters for dense code at small sizes.

Narrow panes

55% of the em a character or less: more columns in a split editor or a terminal.

Logos

The fifth of monospaced fonts least like any other, with no family or copy of their own: their closest match here scores 76 of 100 or less. A technical wordmark set in one looks like no other.

04 / Questions

Monospace fonts, answered

What is a monospace font?
A font whose characters all take the same width, from a narrow i to a wide m, as on a typewriter, so text lines up in columns. Code editors and terminals use one; Courier New and Consolas, which come with Windows, are monospaced.
What is the best font for coding?
One with a bold for keywords and an italic for comments: by our measures, Roboto Mono, IBM Plex Mono, JetBrains Mono and Geist Mono have four weights or more and italics. Fira Code and JetBrains Mono also draw pairs such as => and != as single symbols: ligatures, which some programmers like and others switch off. Press Start 2P, Noto Sans Mono and Doto, filed under other kinds here, are monospaced too.
What font looks like a typewriter?
Our lab files Cutive Mono, Courier Prime, Xanh Mono and Libertinus Mono as typewriter faces, by the look of their letters. Special Elite, filed under display, looks typed with a worn ribbon. Courier New, which comes with Windows, has a free twin with its metrics: Cousine. The typewriter generator sets your own words in them.
Are these monospace fonts free for commercial use?
Yes, in editors, apps and products alike. All 99 monospaced fonts are free, under licences that allow commercial use: 96 under the SIL Open Font License, 2 under the Ubuntu Font Licence and 1 under the MIT License. Every one may ship inside the software you make, with its licence.
What are the most popular monospace fonts?
On Google Fonts, the most used monospaced families are Roboto Mono, IBM Plex Mono, JetBrains Mono, Inconsolata and Geist Mono, in that order: the list of all 99 on this page starts with them in its Most used order.
Which monospace fonts work in Google Docs and Word?
Google Docs adds Google Fonts families under More fonts in its font menu, so 48 of these 99 monospaced fonts are most likely there. Of these monospaced fonts, one is a colour font, which Google says Docs likely does not support yet. The 50 monospaced fonts from Fontsource and their makers’ own releases are not in Docs. None of these monospaced fonts is one of Microsoft 365’s cloud fonts: install one from its source to use it in Word. Windows 11 comes with Consolas, Courier New and Lucida Console, each linked to the free fonts most like it.
