Practise cursive

Where it is taught, cursive starts in second or third grade, around ages 7 to 9, once children print well. The sheets also suit older pupils and adults relearning a joined hand, at Medium or Small.

Pick the model
Four school hands: US traditional, US modern, UK joined and Australia (NSW). Use the one your school teaches, so the joins match what is taught in class.
Pick the size
Large rows are 3/4 inch from top line to baseline, for beginners; Medium is 1/2 inch, and Small, 3/8 inch, comes close to wide-ruled notebook paper.
Rows to write in
Trace, then write leaves an empty row under each traced one, for the same letters from memory; Trace only fills the page with grey letters to go over.

The order to practise in

  1. 1i t u w e l b h f k r s j pUndercurve letters first: all fourteen begin with the same rising stroke from the baseline, learnt once.
  2. 2a c d g o qThen the downcurve letters, which open with the backward curve of c.
  3. 3n m v x y zThen the overcurve letters, which start with a small hump over the midline.
  4. 4A to ZCapitals last, beginning with those that run into the next letter; ten of the 26 stand apart.

Cursive worksheets, answered

Which handwriting model should I choose?
The one your school uses. US traditional is the classic looped cursive, US modern a simpler joined hand, UK joined the joined style of British schools, and Australia (NSW) the hand of New South Wales schools.
Why trace before writing?
Tracing teaches the path of each stroke, where it starts, which way it goes and where it joins; writing the same letters in the empty row below shows whether the path has stuck.
Can I make a sheet from my own words?
Yes: type any word, name or sentence, and the sheet sets it in the model you chose as pale letters to go over, each line followed by an empty row.

Not sure how a letter is formed? The cursive alphabet shows each of the 52 on its lines, with where it starts, where it joins and what it is often mistaken for.

Still on print letters? The letter tracing worksheets set the alphabet, the numbers or a name in dotted letters to trace.
