Calibri font

Calibri is a humanist sans serif by Lucas de Groot, first issued by Microsoft in 2007. It comes with Windows: use it on that computer, in documents and pictures, but its licence doesn’t let you put the font file on a website or pass it on. These 24 free sans serifs come closest to it, measured letter by letter, closest first. Carlito is drawn to its exact widths and heights: it replaces Calibri without moving a line.

Read by hand on 1 October 2026 from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA), Microsoft’s and Apple’s lists of their fonts, Monotype’s list of its trademarks and the foundries’ and shops’ own pages. The references are linked beside each fact; a page that sells or hands out the font is not, so a fact read only there shows no link.

Questions about Calibri

Is Calibri free?

Free to use where it is installed, not to pass on: Calibri comes with Windows, and its licence doesn’t let you put it on a website or pass the file on. Carlito is the free font made to stand in for it, with Calibri’s exact widths and heights, under the SIL Open Font License. The 24 fonts on this page are free to use, commercially and on websites too: 20 under the SIL Open Font License, 3 under the ITF Free Font License and 1 under the Apache License.

Which free font has the same metrics as Calibri?

Carlito. Its letters take Calibri’s widths and its heights match, so a document set in Calibri keeps its line breaks and page count in Carlito. Up close, Carlito has nearly identical proportions.

Which free font is closest to Calibri?

Asap Condensed, at 93 out of 100 in our letter-by-letter match, then Asap (93) and Istok Web (83). Next to Calibri, Asap Condensed is 9% narrower and 7% heavier, with an x-height 12% taller.

Can I use a free Calibri alternative in Word or Google Docs?

In Google Docs, most likely: Carlito, Asap Condensed, Asap and 17 more of them can be added from the font menu, under More fonts. In Word, none of them is one of Microsoft 365’s cloud fonts: install the one you choose from its page here, then restart Word, and it is in the font menu.
