Syntax® font

Syntax is a humanist sans serif by Hans Eduard Meier, first issued by Linotype in 1968. It isn’t free: it is a paid typeface, sold by Linotype. FontKind hasn’t measured it, so the free fonts below stand beside it by their own description and by class, not by measurement.

Questions about Syntax

Is Syntax free?

No. Syntax is a paid typeface, sold by Linotype. The free fonts on this page are free for commercial use too, under open licences.

Who designed Syntax?

Syntax was designed by Hans Eduard Meier, and first issued by Linotype in 1968.

Can I use Syntax in Word, Google Docs or Canva?

In Word, only after you install a licensed copy: neither Windows nor Microsoft 365 comes with Syntax. Google Docs adds fonts from Google Fonts, and Syntax isn’t one of them; of the free fonts on this page, Lato, Fira Sans and Source Sans 3 are there, under More fonts. Canva publishes no list of its fonts: search its font menu, or, with Canva Pro, upload a font whose licence allows it.

What is the closest free alternative to Syntax?

FontKind hasn’t measured Syntax: it has no licensed copy of it, so this page doesn’t rank free fonts by how close they come. Lato, Fira Sans and Source Sans 3 are humanist sans serifs in Google Fonts’ own classification, the class FontKind matches to Syntax.
