YouTube font

YouTube sets its interface in Roboto, the typeface Google made, and Roboto is free: it is the first font below. The logo is lettering of its own, drawn after Alternate Gothic, and the brand’s headlines are in YouTube Sans, made for YouTube. The other fonts below are free too, with the logo’s narrow, bold build.

02 / The lettering, and your questions

01

What font does YouTube use?

Roboto, the typeface Google developed, is YouTube’s system and body text font; YouTube Sans, its own typeface, sets the headlines beside it. Source: Google Design: YouTube Sans

The wordmark was long a modified Alternate Gothic, and the new logo kept to it, redrawn for screens. YouTube Sans was built on the grid of the old play icon, which gave its ascenders their angled cuts; in 2018 it grew to seven weights. Source: Google Design: YouTube Sans

Oswald, the second font below, is a free reworking of Alternate Gothic. Source: Google Fonts: Oswald

02

Is the YouTube font free?

Roboto is, and so are the other fonts on this page: free, free for commercial use too, under open licences. The logo is lettering, not a font, and YouTube Sans was made for YouTube’s own use.

03

How do I use these fonts in Canva?

Search Canva’s font menu for the font’s name: Canva publishes no list of its fonts, so the menu is the only way to know. If it isn’t there, Canva Pro and Teams can upload a font file: get it from the font’s page here.

On the free plan, make a PNG of your words in the font generator and upload it as an image.

04

And in Cricut Design Space?

Install the font on your computer from its page here: Design Space lists the fonts on your computer as system fonts. Or type your words in the font generator and download the SVG: its letters come welded, to cut in one piece. More in Cricut fonts.

05

Can I use them on things I sell?

The fonts, yes: every font on this page is under an open licence that allows commercial use, on shirts, signs, cards and logos. But YouTube and its logo are someone else’s trademarks: a design that copies the logo or uses the name can still need the owner’s permission. This is a plain answer, not legal advice.
