About cursive text
01
Eleven letters from an older set
Unicodeโs script alphabet has holes. Eleven of its letters were in Unicode long before it, as symbols of physics and maths: โฌ, โฐ, โฑ, โ, โ, โ, โณ and โ among the capitals, โฏ, โ and โด among the small letters. The alphabet uses those, so in some fonts they look a little different from the letters around them.
Bold script has no holes: its 52 letters are one set, and it looks even.
02
Separate letters, no digits
Each letter is a character of its own, so they never join up as handwriting does, and Unicode has no script digits: numbers stay as you type them.
For joined-up cursive, the cursive alphabet shows how each letter is written; for cursive in a design, the font generator sets your words in real cursive fonts.
03
Where it works
They show on todayโs phones and computers, in Instagram and TikTok bios, names, captions and comments, in Discord display names, nicknames and messages, and in posts on X and Facebook. Usernames take only plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and Facebook turns them down in a profile name.
On X each cursive letter counts as two of a postโs 280 characters, so a styled post holds about half as many letters.
04
Who can read it
To a screen reader they are not letters: in tests published in 2025, NVDA, VoiceOver and Narrator skipped styled letters altogether, JAWS spelled each one out with its style, and only TalkBack read the words. Search may not read them as words either. Keep cursive to a name or a line, and write what people need to read in plain letters.
Cursive text, answered
- Why do some cursive letters look different?
- Eleven letters of Unicodeโs script alphabet, B, E, F, H, I, L, M, R, e, g and o, were in Unicode before the rest as symbols of physics and maths, so the alphabet uses those older characters. Some fonts draw them in another hand. Bold cursive has no such letters and looks even.
- Is there cursive for numbers?
- No. Unicodeโs script alphabets have letters only, so numbers stay as you type them. Bold, double-struck and monospace on the copy and paste fonts page have digits of their own.
- Can I use cursive in my Instagram name?
- In the name on your profile, yes: paste it in under Edit profile. Not in your username, which takes only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Search may not match cursive letters to plain ones, so keep the name people search for readable.
- Is this real cursive handwriting?
- No: these are separate characters that look like script, and they do not join. To learn real cursive, the cursive alphabet shows how each letter is formed, with worksheets to print; for cursive in a design, the font generator sets your words in real cursive fonts.
- Light or bold cursive: which reads better?
- Bold, mostly. Its 52 letters are one set, with nothing borrowed, and its heavier strokes hold up at the small size of a bio. Light script is daintier, but eleven of its letters come from an older set and can look out of step.
