Handwriting font generator

Handwriting fonts are drawn from real hands, keeping the wobble of one person’s print, scrawl or joined script. Unlike formal scripts, they leave the letters untidy on purpose.

Notes, labels, recipe cards, scrapbooks, slides that should feel like a whiteboard, and a character’s voice in a comic or a game.

Caveat is compact note-taking, regular to bold, the one of the four that comes in several weights. Indie Flower is a rounded, upright print; Homemade Apple, a joined pen script, sets about two thirds wider than Caveat; and the loosest, lightest hand of the four belongs to Nothing You Could Do, which shares a designer, Kimberly Geswein, with Indie Flower.

A handwriting font repeats every letter exactly, and in a long text the repeats give it away; keep it to a line or two among plain text.

A font like these is an outline, so Design Space’s pen traces both sides of every stroke. For the machine to write by hand, pick a writing-style font in Design Space, and use these to cut or to print.

Homemade Apple takes far more room than the others, so give it extra line spacing and fewer words a line. For a worksheet in someone’s hand, Indie Flower stays readable at small sizes.
