About gothic text

01

Fraktur stands in for Old English

Unicode has one blackletter, Fraktur, the German style of the sixteenth century on, kept for mathematicians, who write ๐”ค for a Lie algebra. The Old English look of diplomas, mastheads and tattoos, textura, has no alphabet of its own, so Fraktur stands in for it, here and on every site like this one.

02

Five capitals from earlier

C, H, I, R and Z were in Unicode before the rest of the alphabet, as โ„ญ, โ„Œ, โ„‘, โ„œ and โ„จ, so the light alphabet uses those, and they can look a little different. Bold Fraktur has no holes. Neither has digits: numbers stay as typed.

03

Where it works

They show on todayโ€™s phones and computers, in Instagram and TikTok bios, names, captions and comments, in Discord display names, nicknames and messages, and in posts on X and Facebook. Usernames take only plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and Facebook turns them down in a profile name.

On X each gothic letter counts as two of a postโ€™s 280 characters, so a styled post holds about half as many letters.

To a screen reader they are not letters: in tests published in 2025, NVDA, VoiceOver and Narrator skipped styled letters altogether, JAWS spelled each one out with its style, and only TalkBack read the words. Search may not read them as words either.

Gothic text, answered

Is gothic text the same as Old English?
Nearly. Both are blackletter. Old English, as on diplomas and newspaper mastheads, is textura; Unicodeโ€™s gothic letters are Fraktur, the German kind, rounder and more broken. Fraktur is the only blackletter Unicode has, so it stands in for both.
Why do C, H, I, R and Z look different?
Those five Fraktur capitals were in Unicode before the rest of the alphabet, as symbols for maths, so the alphabet uses the older characters, and some fonts draw them a little apart. Bold gothic has no such letters.
Are there gothic numbers?
No. Unicodeโ€™s Fraktur alphabets have letters only, so numbers stay as you type them.
How do I get gothic letters for a tattoo or a shirt?
Use real fonts: the Old English translator and the gothic font generator set your words in free blackletter fonts and save them as a PNG to take to an artist or a printer.
