Art deco lettering

01

What it is

Art deco lettering is the style from between the wars: geometric capitals, high contrast, very thin or very bold strokes, as on cinema fronts, hotel signs and travel posters.

02

When to use it

Gatsby parties, cocktail menus, wedding signs, theatre and hotel branding, and posters with a jazz-age feel.

03

The fonts here

Poiret One is thin and geometric, the lightest of the four; Limelight is the theatre marquee, with strong contrast. Federo is a deco sans with quirky small letters, and Fascinate is the heaviest, bold and high in contrast.

04

In Canva

Poiret One’s hairlines disappear on photos; set it on a flat dark colour with a gold-coloured PNG, and keep Fascinate for headings over images.

05

In Cricut Design Space

Poiret One is too fine for vinyl except at large sizes. Limelight and Fascinate cut cleanly and suit glass and mirror decals.

06

In Word and Docs

Deco capitals look right spaced out: under Font, Advanced, set Spacing to Expanded by a point or two for headings in Poiret One or Federo.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Art deco fonts, answered

What makes lettering art deco?
Geometry and contrast: circles, straight lines and sharp angles, with very thin and very thick strokes side by side and tall, narrow proportions. Limelight and Fascinate show the contrast, Poiret One the geometry.
Which art deco font suits a wedding?
Poiret One for names and lines set large, with Limelight for a heading; both look best in gold or black on a light card.
