Creepy lettering

01

What it is

Creepy lettering is the horror poster’s: letters that drip, splinter, sprout thorns or look clawed, made for Halloween and B-movie titles.

02

When to use it

Halloween invitations and signs, haunted house trails, horror game titles and costume party flyers.

03

The fonts here

All four set capitals only, so lower case typed in them still comes out in capitals. Nosifer drips from every letter and is by far the widest; Eater grows thorns and is the lightest; Butcherman looks hacked out; Creepster is the haunted-house classic. Nosifer, Eater and Butcherman are all by Typomondo.

04

In Canva

Dripping letters need room underneath: leave space below a Nosifer heading, or the drips run into the next line.

05

In Cricut Design Space

Long, fat drips cut well in vinyl; Eater’s thin thorns snap off when weeded unless the letters are large.

06

In Word and Docs

For a black Halloween sign, set Design, Page Color to black and the PNG in a bright colour. Word prints page colour only if you tick Print background colors and images under File, Options, Display.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Creepy fonts, answered

What makes a font look scary?
Broken or dripping edges, uneven strokes and spikes, anything that suggests blood, claws or decay. The four here each take one: drips in Nosifer, thorns in Eater, rough cuts in Butcherman and a haunted wobble in Creepster.
Why can’t I type lowercase letters in these fonts?
They draw capitals only: their small-letter keys give capitals again, in Nosifer’s case nearly identical ones. Type normally and the text comes out in capitals either way.
