Fancy lettering

01

What it is

Fancy lettering is the formal kind: copperplate script whose strokes swing from hairline to heavy, flourished capitals, and engraved roman capitals. It comes from the writing masters and engravers of the 1700s and 1800s, and lives on in wedding stationery.

02

When to use it

Wedding invitations, save-the-dates, place cards, menus, certificates and gift tags: names and short lines, set large on plenty of white paper.

03

The fonts here

Pinyon Script is the copperplate, with the sharpest swing from thick to thin of the four; Parisienne is a softer, rounder script. Cinzel Decorative sets capitals only, some with swashes, in three weights up to black, and Monsieur La Doulaise is the most flourished, its small letters tiny beside capitals that sweep far out.

04

In Canva

A PNG keeps the colour it was drawn in, so pick the shade of your invitation, gold or ink blue, in the generator before you download. Leave space around Monsieur La Doulaise: its swashes reach well past the words.

05

In Cricut Design Space

For place cards the machine writes, Design Space’s pens draw a font like these as an outline, not a single line. Pick one of Design Space’s writing fonts for pen work, and keep these fonts for cutting cardstock or vinyl.

06

In Word and Docs

Mail merge prints a whole guest list onto place cards or envelopes in one go: Mailings, Start Mail Merge, then Labels or Envelopes, in a font you have installed.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Fancy fonts, answered

What fonts are used for wedding invitations?
A copperplate script for the names, like Pinyon Script or Parisienne here, with roman capitals such as Cinzel Decorative for the date and the place. One script and one plain face is plenty for a card.
Why do flourished capitals look wrong in a word in capitals?
Each was made to open a word, its swashes reaching into the space after it. Typed in a row they collide, so write names with one capital and let the small letters follow.
