Cute lettering

01

What it is

Cute fonts are round, friendly and a little playful: soft corners, short sturdy letters and touches like hearts. Many of them come from Japan’s kawaii lettering.

02

When to use it

Stickers, planners, name labels, children’s party invitations, social posts and small shop signs.

03

The fonts here

Cherry Bomb One is the chunkiest of the four; Hachi Maru Pop is light, wide and round, the widest. Both come from Japan and cover Japanese as well as Latin. Fuzzy Bubbles is a soft handwriting with a bold, and Emilys Candy dots its i with a heart and curls its tails.

04

In Canva

Hachi Maru Pop’s thin strokes get lost on a busy photo: set it on a plain block of colour, and save Cherry Bomb One for pictures.

05

In Cricut Design Space

Print Then Cut suits cute stickers: the PNG prints in colour and the machine cuts round it. Emilys Candy’s little hearts and curls are easier to print than to weed.

06

In Word and Docs

Fuzzy Bubbles comes in a real bold, so Word’s Bold button uses it instead of thickening the regular. Cherry Bomb One and Hachi Maru Pop also set Japanese text, if you install them.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Cute fonts, answered

What is a kawaii font?
Kawaii is Japanese for cute. Kawaii lettering is round and bouncy, with open shapes and small decorations, the style of Japanese stationery and stickers; Hachi Maru Pop and Cherry Bomb One are both drawn in it.
Do cute fonts work for a kids’ name label?
Yes, if the letters stay clear: Fuzzy Bubbles and Cherry Bomb One read at small sizes, while Emilys Candy and Hachi Maru Pop need a bigger label.
