Western lettering
01
Western lettering comes from the wood type of 19th-century American printers: posters for auctions, rewards and travelling shows, with spurs, tuscan points and heavy slabs.
02
Wanted posters, rodeo and barbecue signs, country music flyers, bars and party invitations with a cowboy theme.
03
Rye is the wanted-poster face, its slabs decorated. Sancreek has the forked spurs of a saloon sign, and Smokum is tall frontier lettering, narrower than the other three. Ewert sets capitals only, drawn in outline with a shadow, and is the widest.
04
A wanted poster comes together from three parts: the heading as a PNG in Rye or Ewert, a photo, and the reward in a plain serif typed in Canva.
05
Ewert’s outline and shadow cut as separate thin pieces, and Rye’s and Sancreek’s small decorations as tiny ones. Smokum is the plainest of the four to cut.
06
Ewert has no small letters: type in lower case and you still get its outlined capitals. Keep it to a word or two, with Rye or Smokum below it.
