Comic lettering

01

What it is

Comic lettering is the hand of comic books and cartoons: capitals inside speech balloons, bouncy titles and sound effects drawn to shout.

02

When to use it

Comic panels and speech balloons, sound effects, children’s party invitations, cartoon titles and stickers.

03

The fonts here

Bangers is tall, slanted comic-book capitals, made for titles and sound effects; Luckiest Guy, the heaviest of the four, is round cartoon capitals. Both set capitals only. Chewy has bouncy small letters, and Comic Neue is the one for longer text, in light, regular and bold with italics, a tidier take on Comic Sans.

04

In Canva

Put the PNG inside one of Canva’s speech-balloon graphics, and set Bangers at an angle for sound effects: the slant is drawn into the letters already.

05

In Cricut Design Space

Bangers and Luckiest Guy are heavy capitals that cut and weed easily, good for shirts; Comic Neue’s light weight is too thin for small vinyl.

06

In Word and Docs

Comic Sans MS ships with Windows, Office and macOS; Comic Neue, its free cousin, has true italics and three weights where Comic Sans has two.

The steps for any style, the PNG and the SVG into each app, what the licences allow and what happens to your words, are on the font generator.

Comic fonts, answered

Why are comics lettered in capitals?
Hand-lettered capitals of even height stayed clear on cheap newsprint and fitted neatly into balloons, and the habit stuck. Bangers and Luckiest Guy keep it: they have capitals only.
Is Comic Neue the same as Comic Sans?
No, it is a separate font drawn in 2014 as a cleaner take on Comic Sans and released as an open font. Comic Sans MS, by Vincent Connare, dates from 1994 and belongs to Microsoft.
