Superscript generator
Raised letters and numbers for the places with no superscript button: powers like x², ordinals like 1ˢᵗ, footnote marks and tiny raised text.
Unicode symbols, not fonts: screen readers may skip or spell them out, and search may not read them as words. For print or a logo, use real fonts

About superscript text
01
Powers and ordinals
The first line raises only what should be raised: whatever follows a ^, so x^2 gives x², 10^-3 gives 10⁻³ and e^(x+1) gives eˣ⁺¹, and the endings of ordinals, 1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ, 3ʳᵈ and 4ᵗʰ. The second line raises everything it can.
02
What can be raised
All ten digits, + − = and brackets, and every small letter but q. Capitals have raised forms of their own except C, F, S, X, Y and Z, which take the small raised letter, and Q, which stays as it is. Unicode added a raised q, and raised capitals C, F and Q, in 2021, but few phones show them yet.
¹, ² and ³ are old and show everywhere; the raised letters show on today’s phones, though some fonts draw them at uneven sizes.
03
Real superscript in documents
In Word, select the text and press Ctrl+Shift+= (Cmd+Shift+= on a Mac); in Google Docs, Ctrl+. (Cmd+. on a Mac); in HTML, . Real superscript keeps the plain characters, so it searches and reads aloud as written. Use the raised characters where there is no such button: a post, a chat, a name.
04
Where it works
They show on today’s phones and computers, in Instagram and TikTok bios, names, captions and comments, in Discord display names, nicknames and messages, and in posts on X and Facebook. Usernames take only plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and Facebook turns them down in a profile name.
On X, 17 of the 26 small letters count as two characters each, the others as one.
Superscript text, answered
- How do I type x squared?
- Type x^2 in the box: the first line gives x², ready to copy. Squared alone is ², cubed is ³.
- How do I write 1st with the st raised?
- Type 1st: the first line raises the ending, 1ˢᵗ, and so it does for 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
- Is there a superscript q?
- Unicode added one in 2021, but few phones and computers have a font with it yet, so q stays as it is here.
- How do I do superscript in Word or Google Docs?
- In Word, select the text and press Ctrl+Shift+= (Cmd+Shift+= on a Mac). In Google Docs press Ctrl+. (Cmd+. on a Mac). Both keep the plain characters, which is better for documents than the raised ones from this page.
