Subscript generator
Lowered numbers and letters for the places with no subscript button: formulas like H₂O and CO₂, indices like x₁ and aₙ, and tiny lowered text.
Unicode symbols, not fonts: screen readers may skip or spell them out, and search may not read them as words. For print or a logo, use real fonts

About subscript text
01
Formulas
The first line lowers only what a formula lowers: digits after a letter or a bracket, so H2O gives H₂O and Ca(OH)2 gives Ca(OH)₂, and whatever follows an underscore, so x_1 gives x₁ and a_{n+1} gives aₙ₊₁. A number that starts a formula, as in 2H2O, stays full size, and a ^ raises a charge: SO4^2- gives SO₄²⁻.
02
What can be lowered
All ten digits, + − = and brackets, but only 17 letters: a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x. There are no lowered capitals, and no lowered b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z: those stay full size.
03
Real subscript in documents
In Word, select the text and press Ctrl+= (Cmd+= on a Mac); in Google Docs, Ctrl+, (Cmd+, on a Mac); in HTML, . Real subscript keeps the plain characters, so it searches and reads aloud as written. Use the lowered characters where there is no such button.
04
Where it works
They show on today’s phones and computers, in Instagram and TikTok bios, names, captions and comments, in Discord display names, nicknames and messages, and in posts on X and Facebook. Usernames take only plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and Facebook turns them down in a profile name.
On X, 17 of the 26 small letters count as two characters each, the others as one.
Subscript text, answered
- How do I write H₂O?
- Type H2O in the box: the first line lowers the 2 and gives H₂O, ready to copy. CO2, C6H12O6 and Ca(OH)2 work the same way.
- Why are some letters not lowered?
- Unicode has lowered forms for only 17 letters, a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x, and none for capitals. The others stay as you typed them.
- How do I write a chemical charge?
- Put a ^ before it: SO4^2- gives SO₄²⁻ and Ca^2+ gives Ca²⁺. The superscript generator raises anything else.
- How do I do subscript in Word or Google Docs?
- In Word, select the text and press Ctrl+= (Cmd+= on a Mac). In Google Docs press Ctrl+, (Cmd+, on a Mac). Both keep the plain characters, which is better for documents than the lowered ones from this page.
