Italic text generator

Slanted letters for the places with no italic button. Type once and copy your text in four italic styles: serif or sans, light or bold.

Unicode symbols, not fonts: screen readers may skip or spell them out, and search may not read them as words. For print or a logo, use real fonts

About italic text

01

The h from physics

Unicode’s serif italic alphabet has one hole: its small h was already in Unicode as β„Ž, the Planck constant, so that is the h you get. In most fonts it matches its neighbours. The sans italics and the bold italics have no hole.

Unicode has no italic digits, so in all four styles numbers stay upright as you typed them.

02

Italics an app can do itself

Discord and WhatsApp slant text themselves, and screen readers read it as words: _italic_ on WhatsApp, *italic* or _italic_ on Discord. Use the styled letters where there is nothing like it: Instagram and TikTok bios and captions, Facebook posts and comments, X.

03

Italic or cursive

Italic is the slanted form of an ordinary typeface: its letters still stand apart. Cursive imitates joined handwriting, with loops. Here italic is Unicode’s mathematical italic; for script, see the cursive text generator.

04

Where it works

They show on today’s phones and computers, in Instagram and TikTok bios, names, captions and comments, in Discord display names, nicknames and messages, and in posts on X and Facebook. Usernames take only plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and Facebook turns them down in a profile name.

On X each italic letter counts as two of a post’s 280 characters, so a styled post holds about half as many letters.

To a screen reader they are not letters: in tests published in 2025, NVDA, VoiceOver and Narrator skipped styled letters altogether, JAWS spelled each one out with its style, and only TalkBack read the words. Search may not read them as words either.

Italic text, answered

How do I write in italics on Instagram?
Instagram has no italic button. Type your text here, tap one of the italic lines to copy it, and paste it into your bio, a caption or a comment.
Why does the italic h look different?
Unicode’s italic alphabet leaves out the small h, because β„Ž, the Planck constant, was already in Unicode; that is the h it uses. Some fonts draw it a little apart from the other italic letters.
What is the difference between italic and cursive?
Italic slants an ordinary typeface and keeps its letters apart; cursive imitates joined-up handwriting. Both are here as Unicode letters: italic on this page, script on the cursive text generator.
Can I get italic numbers?
No. Unicode’s italic alphabets have letters only, so numbers stay upright as you type them.
