Bubble letter G
Bubble G starts as a C, then turns its lower end inward into a short bar, leaving a mouth above that bar.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Sketch a C, then from its lower end a short line up and a short bar going in.
- 2Outline everything at an even width, rounding the corner where the bar turns in.
- 3Keep the mouth above the bar open; it is narrower than a C’s, so start it wide on the skeleton.
- 4Put shadow below the curve and beneath the bar, and a highlight where the curve starts at the top left.
- Watch for
- Two things go wrong: the bar is left out and the G is a C, or the mouth closes and it turns into a 6. Draw the bar clearly and keep a gap above it.
- Mixed up with
Without its bar a bubble G is a C; with the mouth shut it looks like a 6, or an O with a dent.

A page to colour
On US Letter the sheet prints the G 136 mm tall and 132 mm wide, 5.3 by 5.2 inches, with about 141 cm² to colour; on A4, 132 by 128 mm. The alphabet sheets print A to Z or your own name.
One page: the G big and hollow in Modak to colour in, and the same G in the other fonts under it. Crayons, markers or paint; or trace it.
In the print dialog choose Save as PDF to keep a file. The sheet fills one page of US Letter at full size.

03 / Questions
Bubble G, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble G?
The block edge follows the outside of the curve along the bottom, then tucks under the bar and into the mouth.
Does a bubble G need the little bar?
Yes, or nothing tells it from a C. If space is short, make the bar a round bump inside the curve: Modak and Coiny both turn theirs into a short hook.
How do you colour a bubble G?
Colour the bar in the same colour as the curve, so it reads as one stroke turning in; a darker shade just under the mouth makes the opening show.
