Bubble letter W
Bubble W is two Vs side by side, the middle point stopping below the top, so the widest capital keeps three open notches.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Sketch four slants, the middle pair meeting below the top line.
- 2Give all four strokes one width, rounding the three tops and both points at the bottom.
- 3Three notches need watching: the two V-shaped ones from the top and the one under the middle peak.
- 4Add shadow to the right arm’s outside, under both points and in the right-hand notch, with highlights on all three tops.
- Watch for
- The W is the widest bubble capital, and squeezing it to fit closes the notches. Give it more room on the line than the letters beside it.
- Mixed up with
Flipped, a bubble W is an M; with round bottoms, as Coiny draws it, it reads as two Us joined, and a narrow one as a V with a dent.

Bubble W, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble W?
A W gets its 3D edge on the right arm, under both points and into the middle notch.
How do you fit a bubble W on a line?
Let it be about half as wide again as the other capitals, and lower the middle point, which narrows the W without closing its notches.
How do you colour a bubble W?
Colour it as two Vs, one after the other, and do the narrow notches first with a fine tip.
