Bubble letter E
Bubble E is a flat back with three fat arms, the middle one shortest, and two narrow gaps between the arms that must stay open.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Mark out a line down and three arms off it to the right, the middle arm shorter than the others.
- 2Thicken each arm and the back by the same amount, finishing every arm in a round tip.
- 3Keep both gaps between the arms as deep slots that reach almost to the back.
- 4Grey the underside of every arm and the lower left of the back, and add a shine along the top arm.
- Watch for
- Three swollen arms leave no room between them, and the E melts into a block. Space the arms out on the skeleton, and make the letter a little taller than its neighbours if you need to.
- Mixed up with
Lose the bottom arm and a bubble E is an F; let the gaps fill in and it reads as a square.

One page: the E big and hollow in Modak to colour in, and the same E in the other fonts under it. Crayons, markers or paint; or trace it.

03 / Questions
Bubble E, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble E?
An E in 3D gets its thick edge under each of the three arms, round their tips, and along the foot of the back.
How do I fit three arms into a bubble E?
Make the arms slimmer than the back and leave each gap at least half as wide as an arm. Modak gets away with slits only because it is printed: by hand, give the gaps more room.
How do you colour a bubble E?
Colour each arm in a stroke of its own, starting from the back; the two slots are narrow, so colour along them, not across.
