Bubble letter V
Bubble V is two fat arms meeting at a round point on the baseline, with an open notch between them at the top.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Pencil a pair of slants joined at the bottom.
- 2Wrap both arms in a single even outline with round tops and a round point.
- 3Hold the V-shaped opening clear nearly down to the point; it closes from the bottom as the arms swell.
- 4Shade the right arm’s outer edge and beneath the point, and put a glint on the left arm’s top.
- Watch for
- Round the point too much and the V turns into a U, which Coiny’s V nearly is. Keep the bottom narrower than the top.
- Mixed up with
With a round bottom a bubble V passes for a U, and Coiny draws its V that way; with a stem under the point it is a Y.

03 / Questions
Bubble V, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble V?
A V in 3D takes its edge down the right arm’s outside and under the point, plus a strip on the left arm within the notch.
How pointed should the bottom of a bubble V be?
Round, but clearly narrower than the top. The point is what tells a V from a U once both are fat.
How do you colour a bubble V?
Colour each arm from its top down to the point, and finish the point last, where the two colours meet if you use two.
