Bubble letter N
Bubble N ties two fat posts with one thick diagonal from the top left to the bottom right, leaving a round notch open in two corners.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Lay down two uprights and a slant from the left one’s top to the right one’s foot.
- 2Inflate all three strokes together, so the four ends of the posts come out round.
- 3Keep two notches open and round-ended, top right and bottom left; they are the only white inside an N.
- 4Darken the right post’s outer side and the diagonal’s underside, with a highlight on the left post’s top.
- Watch for
- A diagonal as thick as the posts fills both notches, and the N becomes a slanted brick. Draw the slant a little thinner than the posts, or the posts further apart.
- Mixed up with
Run the diagonal the other way and a bubble N is its own mirror image, a slip children make often; with a second V it becomes an M, and with the diagonal flattened, an H.
- Practise with
- Nice · Noah · Night · New

03 / Questions
Bubble N, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble N?
An N in 3D takes its thick edge along the right post, beneath the diagonal into the bottom-left notch, and along both feet.
Which way does the diagonal of a bubble N go?
Down from the left post’s top to the right post’s foot. Check the direction in pencil first: once the strokes are fat, a backward N is hard to fix.
How do you colour a bubble N?
Colour the diagonal in one sweep from top left to bottom right; the two notches are slim triangles, best done first with a fine pen.
