Bubble letter R
Bubble R is a P with a fat leg kicking out from under its bump, the notch where the leg leaves the bump rounded.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Rough in a line down, a bump off its upper half, and a leg from the end of the bump to the baseline.
- 2Fatten every stroke alike, rounding the tip of the leg and the foot of the stem.
- 3Leave the bump its hole, and the gap between leg and stem open down to the baseline.
- 4Darken the right of the bump, the leg’s outer edge and its foot, with a highlight high on the back.
- Watch for
- A leg that starts from the stem rather than the bump turns the R into a K. Start the leg where the bump comes back, and slant it out.
- Mixed up with

- Practise with
- Rainbow · Rose · Ryan · Rock

03 / Questions
Bubble R, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble R?
Depth on an R curves round the bump, then follows the leg down its outer side and under its foot.
Is the leg of a bubble R straight or curved?
Both work: Titan One kicks a straight leg out and Bagel Fat One curves it like a tail, but a straight leg is easier to keep fat by hand.
How do you colour a bubble R?
Colour bump and leg in one sweep, as the R is written; the gap under the bump is narrow, so do it first.
