Bubble letter Z
Bubble Z is a top bar, a fat diagonal and a bottom bar drawn as one line, its two turns rounded so the outline bends instead of breaking.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Begin with a bar across the top, a slant down to the left, and a bar across the bottom.
- 2Inflate the zigzag evenly, rounding both turns and every end.
- 3Leave the two notches open: under the diagonal at the bottom left, above it at the top right.
- 4Shade under both bars and along the diagonal’s right side, with a highlight on the top bar.
- Watch for
- Backwards Zs are common, and so are diagonals too fat to leave the notches. Check the slant runs from the top right to the bottom left before you outline.

03 / Questions
Bubble Z, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble Z?
On a Z the shadow block sits under both bars and along the right side of the diagonal.
How do I stop a bubble Z looking like a 2?
Keep the diagonal straight and the top bar flat: a top that curves over becomes the round head of a 2.
How do you colour a bubble Z?
Colour the Z in one line from the top left, along the bar, down the slant and along the bottom, as it is written.
