The font
Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
Step by step
  1. 1Pencil two short slants meeting at the middle and a line from there down.
  2. 2Swell arms and post to one width so the tops of the arms and the foot end round.
  3. 3Leave the fork where the arms meet open and round; it is the only white a Y has.
  4. 4Grey the right arm on its outside, the post’s right side and the foot, with a light spot on the left arm.
Watch for
Arms that meet too low make a V on a stump, and arms too fat fill the notch, leaving a cup. Meet them just above the middle.
Mixed up with

Without its post a bubble Y is a V, and Modak’s Y is close to a cup on a stem; with straight arms it can pass for a T.

03 / Questions

Bubble Y, answered

A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.

Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble Y?

The 3D edge of a Y runs along the right arm’s outside, the right of the post and under the foot.

Where do the arms of a bubble Y meet?

At the middle or a little above it. Any higher and the arms are too short to keep a notch once they are fat.

How do you colour a bubble Y?

Colour the post first, then each arm into it; the place where they join is the widest part, so it takes the most colour.
