Bubble letter C
Bubble C is a fat ring with a mouth cut out on the right, both ends of the ring rounded off like the ends of a sausage.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Begin with three quarters of a circle, open on the right.
- 2Inflate the curve to an even thickness and cap each end with a half circle rather than a straight cut.
- 3Hold the mouth on the right open as wide as the stroke is thick, so it survives once the ends swell.
- 4Put grey inside the curve near the top and outside it along the lower right, plus a glint high on the ring’s left.
- Watch for
- The usual mistake is a mouth that shuts as the ends swell, which leaves an O. Draw the thin C more open than looks right, about a third of the circle missing.
- Mixed up with
With its mouth closed a bubble C is an O, and with a bar at the lower end it becomes a G.

03 / Questions
Bubble C, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble C?
For depth on a C, thicken the bottom of the ring and both rounded ends, and inside the mouth the underside of the upper end.
How wide should the mouth of a bubble C be?
At least as wide as the stroke is thick. Measure it on the pencil skeleton before you outline: the outline eats into the mouth from both ends.
How do you colour a bubble C?
The C is one fat curve with no hole, the easiest letter to fill; a rainbow follows the curve well, one colour band at a time from end to end.
