Bubble letter U
Bubble U is a deep fat cup, two posts joined by a round bottom, its opening at the top as wide as the curve below it.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Begin with two lines down joined by a curve at the bottom.
- 2Thicken the cup evenly, giving each post a round top.
- 3Keep the opening at the top deep and wide; a narrow one fills in.
- 4Darken the right post, the round bottom of the cup and the inner side of the left post near the top, with shine on both tops.
- Watch for
- Posts that lean together close the top into a bag, and a pointed bottom makes a V of it. Keep the posts upright and the bottom round.
- Mixed up with
With a point at the bottom a bubble U is a V, and with a short left side it reads as a J; Coiny’s V is so round it passes for a U.

03 / Questions
Bubble U, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble U?
The depth of a U wraps the outer side of the second post and the base of the cup; inside the opening it shows on the left post.
How deep is the opening of a bubble U?
At least half the letter’s height. Shallower than that and the U looks like a bowl, and a row of bubble letters loses it.
How do you colour a bubble U?
Colour the U as a cup: down one side, round the bottom and up the other, then fill the opening with a background colour.
