Bubble letter J
Bubble J is a fat post that curls left at its foot into a round hook, stopping well short of the top.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Pencil a line down from the top that curves left at the bottom into a hook.
- 2Thicken the post and the hook alike, with a round tip on the hook.
- 3Keep the space inside the hook open: the tip must not swell back into the post.
- 4Grey the post’s right edge and beneath the hook, and catch the light on the post’s top.
- Watch for
- A hook that climbs too high turns the J into a U. Keep the tip of the hook below the middle of the letter.
- Mixed up with
Raise the hook to full height and a bubble J is a U; flip it and it is an L with a curl.

03 / Questions
Bubble J, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble J?
For the 3D edge, follow the post down its right and wrap the hook’s outer curve up to its tip.
Does a bubble J have a bar on top?
Only some fonts give it one. Titan One leaves the top plain, and Bagel Fat One adds a small bar to the left; either is fine, as long as the hook stays low.
How do you colour a bubble J?
Colour down the post and round the hook in one stroke, the way the letter is written, so the curve stays smooth.
