Lowercase bubble letter e
A bubble e is a round bowl crossed by a bar: a tiny hole above the bar, and an open mouth below it on the right.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Sketch a bar across the middle that curves up, round and back down into an open tail.
- 2Outline the curve and the bar at an even width, the tail ending round.
- 3Keep the slit above the bar, however thin, and the mouth under it open.
- 4Put shadow on the bowl’s base and below the bar, and a shine at the bowl’s top left.
- Watch for
- The e has two openings to keep, and drawn fat it loses both: the hole fills and the mouth closes. Draw the bar high, so the mouth below it has room.
- Mixed up with
With the slit filled a bubble e is a c, and with its mouth closed it is an o; a bowl too round makes it an a.
- Practise with
- egg · elf · emoji · eat

03 / Questions
Bubble e, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble e?
An e shows its depth round the bowl’s bottom, under the tail and, inside the mouth, beneath the bar.
How do I draw the hole in a bubble e?
As a short slit above the bar, not a full circle: there is no room for more. Make it long rather than tall, running most of the way across the bowl.
How do you colour a bubble e?
Colour the bar first, then round the bowl to the tail; the slit above the bar needs only a line of white.
