Lowercase bubble letter w
A bubble w is two small vs joined in the middle, leaving three notches to keep open, a pair above and one below.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Pencil four short strokes in a zigzag, the inner two joining lower than the outer tops.
- 2Thicken the zigzag evenly so its three tips and two valleys come out round.
- 3Keep the three notches open: two at the top and one under the middle.
- 4Shade the last stroke’s outside and under both points, with shine on the three tops.
- Watch for
- A small w squeezed to the width of its neighbours fills in. Let it be the widest small letter, or nearly.
- Mixed up with
Turned over, a bubble w becomes an m; Coiny rounds its valleys, and Bagel Fat One too, so it looks like a pair of u’s.
- Practise with
- wow · wave · win · wish

03 / Questions
Bubble w, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble w?
The 3D edge of a w follows its last stroke and dips under both points.
Should a bubble w have pointed or round bottoms?
Both work: Titan One points them; Coiny rounds them, as Bagel Fat One does, and round bottoms are easier to keep fat, pointed ones easier to read.
How do you colour a bubble w?
Fill each half separately, beginning at the narrow middle notch.
