Lowercase bubble letter i
Lowercase bubble i is a short fat capsule with a round dot above it, the gap between dot and stem the detail that makes it an i.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Pencil a short line as tall as an x and a dot above it.
- 2Wrap the line in a capsule and the dot in a circle, both the same distance out.
- 3Keep a clear gap between the dot and the stem, at least half as tall as the dot.
- 4Grey the right of the stem and of the dot, leaving a glint on the left of each.
- Watch for
- A dot drawn fat swells down into the stem, and the i turns into an l with a knob. Leave more room than you think between them.

Modak draws its i in one piece, its dot swollen down into the short stem; the other four float the dot apart. Modak draws the widest i for its height and Bagel Fat One the narrowest.

A page to colour
On US Letter the sheet prints the i 127 mm tall and 52 mm wide, 5.0 by 2.0 inches, with about 52 cm² to colour; on A4, 138 by 56 mm. The alphabet sheets print A to Z or your own name.
One page: the i big and hollow in Modak to colour in, and the same i in the other fonts under it. Crayons, markers or paint; or trace it.
In the print dialog choose Save as PDF to keep a file. The sheet fills one page of US Letter at full size.

03 / Questions
Bubble i, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble i?
An i in 3D gets a strip beside its stem on the right and a crescent at the dot’s lower right.
How big is the dot of a bubble i?
Close to the stem’s own width: a round ball, not a speck. A dot fatter than the stem crowds it, and a small one vanishes beside fat letters.
How do you colour a bubble i?
Two shapes, so two colours work well: one for the stem and a bright one for the dot.
