Lowercase bubble letter k
A bubble k has a tall fat stem and two short arms branching from it at x-height.
- The font
- Modak. Round, puffed up. Free to use, from the catalogue.
- Step by step
- 1Sketch a tall line and two short slants meeting it at x-height, one up and one down.
- 2Outline stem and arms at one width, rounding the arm ends.
- 3Leave the short wedge between the arms open; on a small k it closes fast.
- 4Darken beneath the upper arm, the lower arm’s outer side and the stem’s far side, and add a dab of light on the stem’s top.
- Watch for
- Arms as fat as the stem fill their notch and leave a stem with a wedge. Keep the arms leaner than the stem.
- Mixed up with
Close its arms into a loop and a bubble k looks like an h with a knot, and with the stem cut short it becomes an x leaning on a post.
- Practise with
- kid · kite · kiwi · koala

03 / Questions
Bubble k, answered
A 3D bubble letter is its outline drawn twice, the copy a little down and to the right, the corners joined.
Where does the depth go on a 3D bubble k?
Depth on a k sits under the upper arm, along the lower arm’s outside and down the stem.
Can a bubble k have a loop?
Yes: Bagel Fat One closes its k’s arms into a loop with a small hole, the only one of the five to do so. It is easier to keep open by hand than a sharp notch.
How do you colour a bubble k?
Colour the stem, then each arm from the joint outwards.
